I managed to clog an US toilet in my first night in a hotel when I traveled from EU. I felt sooooo bad, like wanting to ckeck out and run as far as possible. Then I learned not to throw too much paper into the bowl and flush it often. But, clogging my first US toilet was a humiliating experience. And there was no plunger in the hotel bathroom.

I am sorry you are not happy with the performance of your water-saving model. Many low flow toilets don’t work well, as the manufacturers reduced the amounts of water, without changing the overall flushing design. A regular, siphon toilet is not designed to flush paper and solid waste with reduced amounts of water, so the likelihood of clogging or having to flush twice increases. Standard US toilets clear the bowl with siphon technology, so the diameter of the trap way has to be a small as possible http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_z6pymOet7g&feature=channel_page.) If you are serious about saving water, want a toilet that really works and is affordable, I highly recommend a Caroma Dual Flush toilet. I wish I could find a pre 1970 toilet. I would buy it in a heart beat and throw out this new “water saving” model that requires 10 flushes to get turds down.

If the local water providers in Steamboat Springs manage to make their water conservation rebate program successful, they should come up with a plan that can generate income by providing their water conservation products to other counties and cities. This would create a source from where funds can be obtained and used for other sustainability projects.
